Today’s New Habit Challenge Tip is…
New Pathways have Formed. Over the last few weeks you have changed your brain. You have created new neuro pathways, or ways of processing information and acting that have helped you bypass your old habits and create a new more supportive way of being. As a result you have also strengthened your brain and created a healthier brain.
Brain researchers discovered when we consciously develop new habits; we create parallel synaptic paths and new brain cells that transform our thought patterns. This means the old habit we performed had created a neuro pathway in our brains making that behavior a semi- or sub-conscious habit. By intentionally changing that thought process and creating a new way of doing things or being we created a new parallel neuro pathway that bypasses that old thought or behavior. We have not removed the old thought or behavior we have simply created a new one. As we continue to perform the new thought or behavior we strengthen that new neuro pathway. As the new neuro pathway strengthens we favor it and travel it more often than the old, in essence replacing the old habit with a better habit.
We direct our own personal change by creating new habits. One of my mom mantras for my daughter has been “what YOU choose, YOU create”. I firmly believe in being responsible for one’s own choices, choices create our reality, and life is better when we have lots of choices. Creating new habits is a demonstration of all these elements of choice. We have control over our habits, they better our lives, they support bigger goals, they challenge us, and they lead to a healthier brain.
Creating new habits is a great way to challenge ourselves. If we do not challenge ourselves and create new neuro pathways we atrophy, which may result in dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other brain diseases. Trying new things creates a temporary state of confusion, similar to a crossword puzzle or other mind strengthening puzzles. Confusion is good. After the initial confrontation with confusion the brain begins to organize the new information. This mental organization is the creation of new synaptic connections. The more things we try, the more we step out of our comfort zone and the more creative and brain healthy we become.
Today acknowledge the great work you are doing. You are not only building a new habit that supports a bigger goal and demonstrates your success patterns, you are also building a healthier brain. Continuing with this new habit and joining me each month to create another new habit that supports the life you choose is a healthy and fun way to enhance your life, continue to build your track record of success, and according to brain researches maintain and improve brain health.
Want a peek at what is coming up next month?
I have so enjoyed this series, and received such great feedback, so I have decided to continue it with a focus on Mindfulness next month. The series will be tailored for those who would like to create a personal practice of Mindfulness, live life with more connection to others and their surroundings, and will support those who want to create habits in other areas of life as well. It is a new approach to habit creation and I am really excited to explore it with you.
I will also turn this series into an auto-responder course so anytime you want to start a new habit you can sign up for the auto-responder course and automatically receive the tip of the day in your in-box. Once that is ready I will add a sign up box to the 100 Smile Challenge Blog.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. This month’s series has been something that has lived within me for years. Bringing to you has been my pleasure. See you tomorrow.
